EMDR Certified Clinician

kathryn@pnwbh.com

Kat is a board certified state licensed professional counselor with the state of Oregon and is certified in EMDR. She specializes in treating people 18 and up who experience challenges related to trauma, PTSD, dissociative disorders, and mood disorders. Originally from North Carolina, she has called Oregon home for the last 8 years. She received her Bachelor's degree in Outdoor Experiential Education from Appalachian State University and her Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Oregon State University-Cascades.

Kat began her journey as a therapist by working in a wilderness therapy program in Utah. She was awed by the resilience and creativity of those participants, and drew huge amounts of inspiration from the natural world. She is now living her dream by providing hope, compassion, and results to her clients. She has been inspired by the strength and efficacy of EMDR therapy and ego state therapy, both of which work beautifully in concert. Kat obtained advanced training in dissociative disorders, pre-verbal trauma, and somatic resourcing to better support clients in embodying and owning their therapeutic journey. Of course, humor and joy has its own special place in the healing process!

When she is not in her office, you can find her on any given day spending time with loved ones, running an obstacle course race, or curled up with a book.

ABOUT

EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and was developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in 1987. EMDR is most widely used to process trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It has been clinically proven to be effective through extensive empirical research.

Dr. Shapiro discovered that trauma memories are stored in a part of our brain that is often not able to be healed by regular “talk therapy.” These trauma memories are protected and held by our brains and can sometimes feel “like they just happened yesterday,” causing for some, extreme emotional pain and disturbance in their lives.

EMDR works by stimulating the part of the brain where trauma memories are stored so they can be adequately processed.

The term "processed," means that the memory becomes much less intense and painful, even forgettable, much like the rest of your "non important" memories. This is done with back-and-forth eye movements called BLS (Bi-Lateral Stimulation) directed by your EMDR clinician.

EMDR is not only used to treat trauma and PTSD with amazing results, it is also used to effectively treat:

Panic attacks

Complicated grief

Dissociative disorders

Disturbing memories

Phobias

Pain disorders

Performance anxiety

Stress reduction

Addictions

Sexual and/or Physical abuse

Body dysmorphic disorders

Personality Disorders
